Marine Protected Areas
with Oceana Canada
Beyond our coasts, Oceana Canada seeks to make our oceans as rich, healthy, and abundant as they once were.
Beyond our coasts, Oceana Canada seeks to make our oceans as rich, healthy, and abundant as they once were.
/01CONTEXT
Oceana Canada partners with researchers, non-governmental organizations, the federal government, Indigenous peoples, and the fishing industry to study sensitive marine habitats and advocate for their protection. Canada has surpassed its marine conservation target of protecting 10% of our marine and coastal areas, in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Aichi Target 11, but only marginally. More needs to be done to keep our oceans—and us—healthy.
/02CHALLENGE
It’s simple: protect more of our oceans.
/03SOLUTION
Evermaven deployed a three-person MAVEN team from coast to coast to coast and participated in no less than four expeditions: Imappivut; Northeast Pacific Seamounts; Central Coast of British Columbia; and Gulf of St. Lawrence.
We used the full extent of our visual storytelling prowess to document these seafaring expeditions, alongside Oceana Canada and their partners, and then used a suite of communication services to advance specific campaign action. To address the need to protect more of our oceans, Evermaven produced: an interactive website that curated “Field Notes” and featured an integrated map of key areas to protect; a custom-crafted book specifically designed for The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, who at the time was responsible for designating new marine protected areas; and a series of films that continue to draw attention to Oceana Canada’s broader mission. To truly fulfill the objectives of this ongoing campaign we work alongside Indigenous stewards who guide our collaborative work.
